NASA Jumps Into The Unintended Acceleration Frey

by Toyota in the News on March 30, 2010

Apparently Toyota’s unintended acceleration issues are so complex, that scientists from NASA have been instructed to take part in the ongoing investigation.

According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, nine scientists from the U.S. space agency will help determine whether electronic glitches are behind the problems associated with Toyota vehicles.

The nine NASA scientists will examine complex issues that have an impact on electronic components, such as electromagnetic interference. Due to rising criticism that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration lacks technical expertise, these scientists are intended to make up for that perceived deficiency.

“We are determined to get to the bottom of unintended acceleration,” said Secretary LaHood. “For the safety of the American driving public, we must do everything possible to understand what is happening. And that is why we are tapping the best minds around.”

Aside from employing NASA scientists, the Department of Transportation will also be hiring the National Academy of Sciences to conduct an industry-wide study on unintended acceleration. Both of these new efforts will cost the DoT roughly $3 million.
