Toyota had recently reported that sales of the Prius hybrid had dropped sharply from a year ago. Despite a 30 percent decline in Prius sales, Toyota remained pleased with the results.
While the Prius may have underperformed this past month compared to July 2009, it seems that Toyota and Lexus combined were actually responsible for 73.9 percent of hybrid sales in the U.S. last month. In total, 17,504 hybrid vehicles were sold between the two brands in July, which certainly gives Toyota something to be pleased with.
Compared to a year ago, there haven’t been many new hybrid models to get consumers excited. And, according to analyst Ivan Drury at Edmunds.com, gas prices haven’t risen enough to spark concern about fuel economy.
Coming in at behind Toyota was Ford, which sold 2,896 hybrid vehicles last month. Honda held the third place spot with 2,475 hybrids sold.
