Toyota Recalls 437K, This Time Over Brake System Software

by Toyota in the News on February 9, 2010

When it rains, it pours.

Toyota has recalled 437,000 vehicles worldwide to update software associated with their anti-lock brake system for some and to check potentially bursting hoses for others. This comes on the heels of another recall last month over unintended acceleration issues and a halt in production and sales.

In the US, the recall will include 133,000 Prius, 14,500 Lexus models, and 7,300 4-cylinder Camrys. Prior to this announcement, Toyota was claiming losses of $2 billion through sales and recall expenses.

Last week, Toyota began offering incentives of $1,000 on new Prius Hybrids.

According to the Salisbury Used Car Locator, Toyota has begun an aggressive campaign to reacquire its image as a leader in safety and reliability, including addressing social media questions on sites like Twitter and Digg. Last Friday, Toyota President Akio Toyoda reaffirmed Toyota’s commitment to quality.

“I deeply regret that I caused concern among so many people,” Toyoda said. “We will do our utmost to regain the trust of our customers.”

The image below, made viral on social media sites Reddit and Digg, adds to the grief that Toyota is feeling with the two issues associated with stopping vehicles.
