Although Toyota enthusiasts are no doubt eager for the debut of the FT-86 sports car, new reports suggest that the car has been relayed by about two years.

The FT-86 Concept, a rear-wheel drive sports car developed jointly between Toyota and Subaru, has reportedly gone back to the drawing board for last minute design changes. In addition to tweaking the car’s styling, Toyota executives have hinted that the proposed 2011 launch date was a bit too soon considering the lingering effects of the economic slowdown. The return of a sports car to Toyota’s lineup would be a welcome change, Toyota dealerships MA says.

In developing the FT-86, Toyota aimed for a sports that that would cost around $20,000. Power is supplied by a 200 horsepower boxer engine from Subaru. Toyota is also reportedly working on even less expensive sports car that should be priced around $15,000.
