In light of the recent warnings from Consumer Reports that the Lexus GX 460 could potentially rollover, Toyota not only has suspended sales of the GX worldwide, but has also begun testing all Toyota and Lexus SUVs.
Earlier this week, Consumer Reports issued a “Do not buy” warning for the Lexus GX 460, which had just been updated for the 2010 model year. During emergency handling tests, Consumer Reports testers found that the electronic stability control system was not adequately engaging and thus presented a safety risk.
“When pushed to its limits on our track’s handling course, the rear of the GX we bought slid out until the vehicle was almost sideways before the electronic stability control system was able to regain control,” the magazine said. “We believe that in real-world driving, that situation could lead to a rollover accident, which could cause serious injury or death. We are not aware, however, of any such reports.”
The Lexus GX 460 is not one of Toyota’s highest selling models. However, the timing for these issues could not be worse, and subsequent negative exposure could further tarnish the brand.
Toyota is currently attempting to replicate the issue experienced by Consumer Reports, but engineers at this point have found no such issue. There has been no date set for when the automaker plans to continue sales of the Lexus GX 460.
