A new sports car development jointly between Toyota and Subaru has spurred plenty of excitement by enthusiasts, especially those Toyota fans that want to see more performance vehicles in the brand’s lineup. However, as details of this new sports car emerged, it became apparent that the Toyota FT-86 Concept was going to be pricier than originally anticipated.

For those looking for a budget sports car, there’s apparently no need to fret. New reports are suggesting that Toyota is working on an entirely new model that’s similar to the FT-86 Concept, but will instead have a base price of around $15K when it goes on sale in late 2011 or 2012.

This new baby FT-86 sports car will have an overall length of just 150 inches and have a 1.5-liter four cylinder engine under the hood. Expect power to be just over 100 horsepower. The return of a sports car to the lineup would be a welcome change, according to Littleton Toyota dealers.

This low-cost sports car may be may not designed for the track, but it certainly will provide a great competitor to the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the upcoming Honda CR-Z.
